18-year-old males are definitely required to register and it is a crime not to do so. Since we now have a volunteer military failure to do so is not often prosecuted, but just try to get US educational assistance or a security clearance.

From the SSS:

If you do not register, you could be prosecuted and fined up to $250,000 and/or be put in jail for up to five years. Registration is also a requirement to qualify for Federal student aid, job training benefits, and most Federal employment.
