Unisolar to be used in 4 of 19 UK PV grants

Total grant, announced 11/27/02, is 2.2 million pounds for 19 projects totalling 435kW of PV. SolarCentury is the installer for the 4 Unisolar projects which total 48.9kW.

Here's my table of the 19 projects by cost/peak watt:

Manuf PVtype/use ProjectkWp Projectgrant(UK pounds) Pounds/Wp

BP monoC/module over existing roof 67.7 193089 2.85
Kyocera polyC/modules on roof 10.08 31533 3.13

Solanova polyC/translucent PV sunshades 6 49651 8.27

*This grant is limited to funding 100kWp of this 140kWp project.

** Two USSC projects use thin film integrated roofing without specifying, per the press release, what USSC
product is being used: it could be structural or architectural PV, peel-n-stick or shingles.

Data is just sufficient/insufficient enough to know we have PV apples and oranges in this grant basket with wide variability in same manuf/product costs due presumably to differing installation situations/costs. Unisolar is being used in both building integrated roofing as well as cladding which I take to mean siding (note Thyssen's dramatic use of SolarTec cladding on their steel plant in Germany unveiled in October). The monocrystalline PV from BP predominates but in the particular project where it is 'glass/glass' used for building integrated skylighting the price rises markedly, but again without particulars on the variability/difficulty of installation. This unstated variability/difficulty is shown by the Kyocera polycrystalline modules cost as mounting-on-roof project varying from a low of 3.56 to a high of 5.45 pounds/Wp. I am cautiously comparing these figures when the PV is really building integrated and not just mounted on the outer surface.

Congratulations to Solar Century who are also the installers on several non-Unisolar projects as well; they installed Unisolar on the UK Texaco station over 18 months ago.
