Statistics are always subjective, because they always compare something to something else. There are no absolute statistics.

But what you choose to use in your statistical comparison is subjective. There is no objective way to do such a comparison from the get go. I think that is the point. The sequoia and the children are not obscurantist. You just don't like them because they blow your argument, but what CH says makes perfect sense.
