Potassium ethyl xanthate is a mixture of carbon disulfide, potassium hydroxide or (potassium nitrate and sodium hydroxide) and ethyl alcohol. It forms a flotation reagant that with certain activation chemicals and a frother, in very small quantities, will cause flotation of finely ground sulphide minerals and separation from the gangue. The xanthates made economic the recovery of low grade ore by froth flotation since the 1930's.

Rayon is cellulose xanthate. Xanthates are also used in rubber compounds.

With different alkalis and different alcohols they provide different efficacies in mineral recovery.
