The standard history that I have heard is that there Muhammad had extensive contacts and discussions with Jews in Arabia/Yemen. The Qoran does contain stories from the Midrash which is a Roman period elaboration and commentary on the Bible written in Aramaic. These stories depart from the simple meaning of the Biblical text. This is why the Muslims (like Bin Laden) say that the Jews changed the Bible while the Qoran is the authentic original. Obviously this is untrue - the Jews made no very significant change to the Biblical texts after say 100BC which is the period of the Dead Sea or Qumran scrolls. But I have never heard the view that the Qoran significantly post dates the period of Muhammad.
