I hope that nobody in a position of power is making policy decision on the basis of Saddam being a control freak, survivor and power addict.

With this current administration, it is impossible to rule out anything absurd. Who stated that if the regime has changed its position on WMDs then such condition would constitute a regime change? Hint: he is the president of the most powerful nation in the world.

Whatever the assessment of Saddam, you must include the fact that he makes serious errors in judgement.

If your basis for regime change is that Saddam is prone to make serious errors in judgments then we have quite a long laundry list of regime change candidates around the world. And incidently, it wasn't Saddam, alone, who has made serious errors in judgment. Which hegemon do you think supported Saddam during the Iran/Iraq war?
