The same method was suggested and tried on a small scale for the de-toxification of the Hanford site in Washington State along the Columbia River.

I do not know what became of that afterall.

The Columbia river is said to be the most radioactive river in the world as a result of Hanford's buried waste leaking into the soil and migrating to the river.
