Hot off the Wire: Bomb Scare Shuts 10 IKEA Shops in Netherlands

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Police were searching for a bomb at 10 IKEA stores in the Netherlands Wednesday after finding bombs in two Dutch cities which led them to believe the world's biggest furniture retailer was the target.

Police spokeswoman Elly Florax said two bombs had been found -- one in Amsterdam and one in the town of Sliedrecht in the southwest of the country -- Tuesday. She said police had defused these bombs but would not say where they were found.

"The investigation into these explosives gave us reason to believe that there could be an explosive in an IKEA store. There are 10 in the Netherlands and management chose to shut them while we are searching," Florax said.

"I cannot tell you as yet why we are taking this so seriously," she added.
