<<They claimed that the automatic check out would free up more people to be on the floor.>>

A few automatic checkout terminals for customers who grab a packaged product or two and want to be gone without waiting in line is okay. However, I'm rather skeptical that the offset will be additional personnel on the floor.

It doesn't look like the order helped them.

"They claimed that the automatic check out would free up more people to be on the floor."

That may to some extent be true, but it's not as simple as it sounds.

a) Checkout staff is not knowledgeable in hardware, etc. Can they tell me whether the new toilet tank valve that replaces the float ball is an improvement or not?

b) Checkout staff will still be needed for customer assistance when customer pull two bolts from the drawer and knows neither the price nor the SKU number.

c) How does HD plan to monitor the customer who checks out the three $4 lightbulb packs while overlooking the $40 wrench in his basket? Shoplifting attempts are bound to soar. What does it cost to control this?
