No, my assumption that it was entirely avoidable. We knew that Saddam intended to invade Kuwait. Remember April Gillespie (our ambassador) told Saddam that we don't take sides in an arab-arab dispute, just days before he invaded Kuwait. We should have done what the British did in the early 1960s and sent troops to Kuwait to prevent an invasion.
