You're not a Martin fan.
or
The West

Western Canadians, especially fiscally responsible Albertans, have some very serious grievances with the Liberals. At some point I read a description of the conservatives as eating their young, I think you might have made that comment and it is very true. It is difficult for anyone on the right, the lack of Alliance progress in Ontario is disheartening. I said earlier that Prime Minister Chretien is unassailable, his strong majority represents 40% of the popular vote, by far the largest percentage of any party in the last election. His leadership of the Liberal party has also been quite consistent and in line with typical open purse Liberal policies.
The Liberal strength in the elections comes as much from fear as it does from apathy, the Progressive Conservatives still eat a chunk of the popular vote in Ontario, the BLOC account for a percentage in Quebec and we effectively have a one party system.
Mr. Harper has been extremely effective at building Alliance consensus and healing the party, his low profile may have aided in this. I would enjoy seeing a few prominent Liberals self-destruct.

Prime Minister Chretien could at least do something, that might make Canadians feel better about themselves. The Kyoto accord is going to drive a wedge even deeper Federal/Provincial relations at a time when we can least afford it.

It would certainly be controversial among most Canadians
It didn't elicit much challenge on this thread.

ALL FANS OF THE LIBERALS, PLEASE STAND UP!

deranged psycho who murdered a number of women in Montreal a dozen years ago
You've only had one? What's your secret? Just to difficult to find ANY Canadian when there are only 30 million of you on the 2nd largest national territory in the world?

It focuses resources on the things about which it can issue press releases and have reps appear at ribbon cuttings with cheques in hand. Non-sexy things, like the RCMP, the military, and the justice system, are neglected, the two former in fact being fiscally starved.
There is a subspecies og humanity that specializes in doing this sort of idiocy. There are called "politicians".

The California state budget is $16-$20 billion in deficit. Davis, the guv who squandered a surplus larger than that and got re-elected in spite of it, has proposed across the board budget cuts. The state's teachers are SCREAMING. They are insisting that education, including pay increases, get their original amounts. Even if police, fire, and emergency services have to take deeper cuts to pay for it.
I bet they get their way. Davis is well known for his fear of, and kowtowing to, the teachers' unions.

(The California Republican Party is noted for its skill at finding unelectable candidates. The man they put up against Davis probably would have lost to Osama bin Laden.)

And Canada, who has been a cheerleader for the U.N. almost since the beginning
Why?
If it weren't for the sense displayed on occasion byh the Security Council, the UN would have been rendered irrelevant long ago.

Kyoto: Is global warming real? Probably. Not strongly established yet, but probably.
But even given that, why should certain nations - the US in particular - face depression to implement it, while others, such as China and India, take no hit at all and probably never take a hit since to avoid its limitations all they have to do is refuse to agree to later addendums?

(Their pandering to the immigrant communities is a mix of this worldview and simple politics, a happy union for them).
The US does the same. Illegal immigration from Mexico, followed by mass legalizations, has reached the point where there is a significant vote in favor of continued illegal immigration. It appears irreversible now. So prepare for your southern neighbor to be Mexico.

government account for half the economy
OUCH! You've got a problem!

we have Vimy Ridge
You have more than that. The Canadian Army has to take second place to no one.

Canada is becomming polarized between those who like being given things and those who have to pay for them.
We had the same problem. Things appear to have been backed up - -for a while. Those who wish to steal from the producers to provide bread and circuses for the lazy are just waiting their turn, though.

They would include the vast gulf between Alberta's contribution to the economy and her political influence.
You keep referring to the large economic contribution of Alberta. What does it produce and export?
I think think of it as a large wheat field for about half the year and a sheet of ice the rest.
