This has got to be the number ONE cause of conflict in our society today. I speak of the general public confusion among generalizations, stereotyping, bias, profiling and bigotry. Obviously, a generalization can be statistically true or not. It is a statement about a whole group (of people) and DOES NOT NECESSARILY involve a judgement about a particular person! A stereotype is generally applied to every individual in a group (could be good or bad)and is the basis for bias and bigotry. The essential distinction is whether or not a person stamps EVERY individual in some group with the SAME generalized characteristic. Profiling may or may not be useful, depending on the validity of the statistics. Too many people confuse these terms (in some cases, I believe, intentionally) and go off the deep end.
