Attended part of the CDMA Americas conference in San Diego and found that no one could confirm or deny problems with 3G spectrum clearing & FCC as being reason for service rollout delay. Ran into QCOM investor relations and they immediately stated that 3G (EVDO) has been deployed in Diluth, MN; but when I asked them why it hasn't been deployed in markets where there are more subscribers, they didn't have a response. Likewise, when I went to Verizon store yesterday and asked about their anticipated rollout of 3G, the customer service rep told me that his management briefed everyone to tell customers that 3G in the U.S. will NEVER occur unless FCC frees up spectrum currently utilized by military/govt. So data rates today are 40-80kbps with bursts up to 144kbps. If "3G" occurs, we'll get 600-700kbps (mobile) with some higher 'peak' rates. Doesn't quite sound like the originally advertised 3G connection, but it is a high quality dial-up connection. Fees are currently $99 for unlimited access (at 40-80kbps). According to customer reps, no one is signing up as subscribers must also agree to a two year contract. Just wondered if anyone else out there was hearing this same info. Could explain why mgt has been unloading some shares...if delays continue, risk definitely might increase. Service provider doesn't seem to want to spend money 'creating' a market...they want to simply take profit when the market exists.
