"I don't know if this is left wing or Marxist thinking but I do think it is a prevaling attitude, especially in Europe. I think there is a fantasy about a 'benevolent power' fueling much of the current anti-Americanism. I also think that it is becoming paradigmatic in much of the world - it certainly is in Canada."

I doubt that you can find support for your remark about Europe and its prevailing attitude. It certainly is contrary to that which I have experienced here. Most of the opinion I have met has been support for Americans but not for the uncritical US support of Israel and a healthy skeptical attitude towards Bush's policy on Iraq and Saddam.

Re Iraq and inspection
So far the inspectors have found 4 bottles of Round Up in Saddam's palace work room, to be used in chemical warfare in the palace garden.
They also found a SCUD missile in a broom closet. On closer inspection it turned out to be an ancient HOOVER vacuum cleaner. The word HOOVER had been filed away and SCUD was painted on instead.
In Saddam's living room they found a sinister machine which, when turned on, turned out to be a 32" SONY TV and video. The inspectors figured it out when they saw the video. It was from Saddam's 60 year birthday party.
Finally a deep noise from an unknown weapon was heard and tracked down. It was Maddam Saddam's moustache clipper.

so it is not enough that America act differently but America must change it's very nature

Yes sir, if there is one thing that has surprised me since starting the forum, it been my growing awareness of those sentiments. No question in my mind; it will cause trouble down the line and we certainly need to try and mitigate its effects, and 'reconnect', as much as possible. There are, however, certain times when we will simply 'need' to act -- and we should thoughtfully do it.
