Gary >what is your favorite indicator(s)

A difficult question because, as far as I am concerned, all work when they do and don't when they don't. Thinking about it, indicators which I use frequently are:

1. Bollinger Bands
2. Stochastics
3. On Balance Volume
4. DI/ADX

And, being a long term investor, I prefer weekly to daily charts.

Gary,
I am an old style person. No Chartist here. Here is what I look at.

1. Money supply.
2. Trade balance
3. Yield curve
4. Other indicators of future expections like unemployment, housing starts, balance sheets of major corporations to see how they are currently accounting for current and future expenses.

Not necessarily in this order, but one has to start somewhere.
