That is the first thing I thought of: a lot of the rebuilding was done on our nickel. I just didn't want to give him an opening to trash one of the noblest and most successful programs this country has engaged in.......

I think the same statement can be made about the Marshall Plan in Europe after WW2

I think you are wrong. The Marshall Plan was a net plus for the U.S. because it was able to use that opportunity to convert the factories back to civilian use at the same time that American companies took control of most of the raw materials around the world. Wealth is based on commerce and despite the giveaway promotions, America was at the pinnacle of commerce.
