but PICKING what to sample is not

True if you were looking for certain volcanic rocks you would not start in a mobile belt where you have perfect textbook knowledge the rocks you were looking if they did exist could not contain valuable ore.

However lacking that knowledge and doing a perfectly random area survey was how the richest largest diamond deposit in the world was found.
