I wonder how many people would have thought it possible that after nearly two years of Sharon as Prime Minister, not only would the Intifada be still in full operation, but that the 2nd largest political party in Israel would be calling for the abandonment of the settlements, whether the Palestinians agree to talks or not.

Actually, both were predictable, and Middle East watchers like Tom Friedman said things like, "the process is totally broken down." Part of Sharon's success is that he never (apart from campaign slogans, which count in Israel even less than here) seriously made predictions about shutting down the intifada. During the first year, he made several serious attempts at getting a cease-fire (including calling unilateral cease-fires), when that didn't work, he settled down to fight the intifada while maneuvering for diplomatic and military striking room and US support.

As for Mitzna, his position is practically a charicature of Labor's position all along. I think the vote may deliver a message. I wonder if Labor will remain the 2nd largest party afterwards, or be replaced by Shinui. I hope the latter.

No wonder the Palestinians are fighting on. They can probably see the "light at the end of the tunnel".

If you're right about this, it only proves what political morons the Palestinians are, as if we needed further proof. Arafat has stuck Mitzna with running on a joint Labor-PLO ticket, for all practical purposes.

Actually, Carl, I think there are many people who may have envisioned this situation unfolding including quite a few members at the State Department. But this is only a guess.
