Jorj, the distinction I was trying (unsuccessfully) to make is that not all (apparent) market manipulation is done by the PPT.

Sure, when it acts, the PPT does so through proxies, i.e., JPM and friends, but that is different from when JPM and friends act on their own, with a strict profit motive. Which is not to say that when the Boyz act on behalf of the PPT they do so out of a sense of benevolence -- not at all. It's just that the reward for acting at the behest of the PPT is a bit more subtle than direct trading profits.

An example of this, I think, is the legislation now sailing through Congress which would prevent a brokerage in bankruptcy, (presumably a Chapter 11 reorganization), from being wiped out by its derivative creditors. This legislation was essentially written by the PPT.

So, my thesis is that although the boyz may wish to take the market down hard right now in order to load up cheap, I think that the PPT does not wish them to do so, and whoever takes O'Neill's place at Treasury, (even temporarily), will be even more likely to want the Boyz to do the "right" thing.

The boyz may get their way in this instance, but even if they do, I doubt that the PPT will let them take the market down fast. I think they'll drag it out to prevent the public from getting the impression that things are as bad as they really are.

JMDO,

augie
