I have yet to read a critique of the American character which was not made first, and better, by de Tocqueville.

The wireless is actually pretty reliable; the problem is more with my assorted diversions. I'll read the article, and comment on it as soon as everybody else has forgotten all about it....

Thanks for the presenting the great article on Marxism
Luckily, other Nations are not coordinated enough to organize an effective American bashing contest supported by troops.
Poverty and misery do exist in many countries. In some cases it is caused by actual starvation, but most is caused not by phyical needs. People can be happy with amazingly little in the way of goods, possessions,
or even food (we probably consume 3 to 5 times as much as is needed to exist and work without major
discomfort)
What people need most is hope- hope for a bit better life, reduced oppression, a sense of participation or a least a minor voice in the grand themes of their nation/leaders.
A Dictatorship or King that governs and rules from the top down and ignores the peasants is in deep trouble and must govern thru fear or military power to be used internally.
Castro remains in power because he came from the oppressed and can empathize with commoner.
Saudi Kings remain in power because they share some of the huge wealth with the commoners.
Afganistan is a hopeless case.
Overpopulation or too high a birth rate, without the education or work ethic needed to make land more productive
or make products for export will lead to bad conditions.
The Chinese today are doing an excellent job working within their own borders and establishing trade..
So Saddam has 7 palaces and a paid military and expensive war machines and oil income while the populous is starving? Who can blame the people for turning to Religion for hope when the government provides none at all?
