Oh, the image of Jefferson downing pints of madeira at the City Tavern is one which I cherish. I myself have quaffed pints at the City Tavern, not of madeira but of ale. A charming place. I'd love to have downed a pint of madeira there but if I had I wouldn't have been able to walk.

I like Jefferson very much. A very charming man. We visit Monticello almost every year.

But I don't think the American Revolution was the most important step in the foundation.

Shaking off the shackles of tyranny is a very great thing, but how many have done so only to submit to yet another tyranny? The Soviets in 1917, the Chinese, pretty much every country in South and Central America, Cuba, Haiti, most countries in Africa, Iran, need I go on?
