Ah, thanks for the research, Karen. I don't know much about tax policy except how to grumble when I have to put my returns together and how to get extensions, etc.

My Falwell and Robertson response was simply, of course, to point out that religious groups engage in political stuff fairly regularly. I'm sure if I did a bit of research I could find Catholic Church stuff, etc. I'm not at all certain how that fits in the tax code but they don't appear to lose their exception by virtue of doing it. It's not a left-right thing.

I've also been through the fairly serious metropolitan debates as to why churchs, synagogues, and mosques should not pay property taxes. Not at all clear when you get right down to it. Not because they are political but simply because there doesn't appear to be a serious positive justification.
