I'm told that story's accurate on pilot salaries by an in-law of mine who flies the big 7's for Delta. It seems reasonable to pay six figures for a pilot, and keep the highest standards of selection and performance, making sure to fire the losers ASAP. There should be plenty of good candidates.

Maybe too many. My in-law also told me of a shuttle pilot w. a large family just starting out at $14k/year, and the airline warned him not to apply for gov't aid. It wouldn't look good for the airline if their pilots were known to be getting food stamps. That doesn't sound good, but that's a company decision. Publicity would help rectify that.

It makes no sense to subsidize inefficient carriers, when others are making an honest profit. If they were allowed to fail there are others anxiously waiting to jump in to fill the void.

McCain's proposed binding arbitration is a good first step in getting some truth into the situation, instead the current game of whose lobbyist can pay the biggest political bribes.
