In the Old West, many people went armed. It was essential for survival against the elements and the Native Americans who objected to the interlopers. When one went into town, it was impossible to disarm because one eventually had to leave town. There wasn't much law to speak of, especially in the rural areas far from town. Outlaws became accustomed to demanding their way, and honest people had to take responsibility for their own defense. Sometimes gunfire brokeout, although by no means as frequently as depicted in the movies. Not to minimize the violence, in Alder Gulch Montana, there were 110 murders inside of a year, mostly as a result of robbery on the road. Some of the local lawmen, Wyatt Earp for example, disarmed people who openly carried as an attempt to reduce gunplay. They had no thought of the Second Amendment.

Nowadays, gunplay is infrequently used to resolve differences. People who carry have no intention of using their firearm unless there is no alternative. If outlaws believe that their victims might be armed, they are likely to decide on some other activity for the day.

There's more, but I have to go pick up my wife.
