In parts of California, for instance, which has a real bad smog/pollution problem, there has been a dramatic increase in children born with autism.

The concentration of autistic children in California is attributed to a certain kind of people in the region due to the recent establishment of the Silicon Valley in that region. People we call "nerds" - socially inadept, interested in mathematical problem solving, etc - tend to have autistic children in much higher percentages than normal.

The Geek Syndrome

Autism - and its milder cousin Asperger's syndrome - is surging among the children of Silicon Valley. Are math-and-tech genes to blame?
