Turkey is not self-appointed to the task of protecting its secular democracy, but is given the duty.

The reason I stated it that way is because I've always looked upon Ataturk and his "young turks" military officers as the creators of Turkey's democracy, not it's protectors.

Additionally, the Military holds a political positions within the government, no matter what political party is in power. Thus, the turkish military plays a "quiet" but firm role within the government, not just as a constitutional "protector" as we generally see in the US.
