<But I have to work to keep my skills sharp.>

Finally, you're admitting that you're an ignoramus but of course when one admits to being ignorant they really should look up the definition first.

<Canada is one of many nations around the world who are happy to benefit from the free billions we give them ($2B, for Canada). This doesn't count the fact that we keep them from having to have their own damned military. When they're needed, they are notably absent.>

What are these free billions you're talking about? We are each other's biggest trading partners although free trade seems to mean 'only good for America'. You can't be talking about foreign aid as America only gives $11.4 billion (as of 2003 budget) and giving 2 billion of that to Canada would seem a little ludicrous.

If America can blow up the world 1000 times over, what's the point in other countries having large military's? Our military is underfunded but Canada performs many peacekeeping duties around the globe. Canada has been involved in every 'endeavor' that America has ever asked of them. The Iraq situation is the first time questions have been raised. Well, maybe cruise missile testing back in the '80s but that went ahead and was not a very big deal. Your problem is that you receive an American viewpoint from conservative news about other nations. It seems America is always calling someone a fair weathered friend if they aren't a complete lapdog.

Fair weather friends, I'd say. And we have a bunch of them.

Obviously, it hasn't crossed your mind that they may not be the problem.
