There is, as far as I can see, no reason to believe anything critical is more likely to happen now than in the past 50 years.

War with Iraq would not be critical to the world. A biological attack would almost certainly be quite contained, and also not critical to the world. As you say, one can never know what a critical event is until after it has happened, but one can sometimes predict that things are ripe for a critical event. They don't seem to be right now.

The author, IMO, was just trying to make himself look more important. Not an uncommom failing for political commentators. They all like to think they are important. And in the span of human life, few of them are.
