If you will think back to the 50's, you will remember how the "Godless" commies irked us. Were we jealous? No. We had an ideological conflict with them. That is, imo, what is present in the ME

We didn't just have a difference of philosophy with the USSR, X. We were engaged in a struggle for the hegemony of the world. This hardly describes relations between Israel and Egypt. Israel is not trying to conquer Egypt. I was trying to point out the uniqueness of the situation inasmuch Israel's mere existence is the heart of the grievance. Sympathy for the Palestines is, as the Arabs say, an "identity thing", that is, it doesn't actually extend to the Palestinians as people outside the fight-against-Israel context.
