... dvdw ... aw, c'mon ... you mean you didn't enjoy my forecast for the Nittany Lion-Cornhusker game a few months ago ... <g> ...

<<Pennsylvania is unusual (at least compared to what I am used to) as far as high school football playoffs are concerned ... the 8 best teams in the state in each of the 4 different classes have a weekly single elimination playoff from a week or two before Thanksgiving until there are 2 teams left in each class ... then the final 8 travel to Hershey (outside of Harrisburg) to determine the 4 PIAA State Football Champions on the same field at Hershey Park over two days... all 4 games are televised live across the state on public television.

Last night, Jan and I watched the championship game (for the top level) between Parkland of Allentown and Woodland Hills of Pittsburgh ... the quality of both the TV coverage and play was superb.

What was amazing was watching 6'-200 pound senior Austin Scott play for Parkland. I have heard about him all season, but never saw him before ... WOW ... 1st play of the game, 61 yards off-tackle for a TD ... bye-bye.

Against #3 in the nation Woodland Hills last night, Scott had 251 yards rushing on 18 carries and 5 TDs in their 34-12 championship victory. Just your typical game for Scott as he concluded his senior season with over 3,800 yards rushing and scored 53 TDs in the 15 game play-off extended season - breaking the previous season rushing record by over 800 yards. I repeat - he scored 53 TDs in one season!

Scott is a solid student and committed to Penn State last summer. If all goes well, he will probably be the first freshman to start at tailback for Penn State since Curt Warner in 1979.

Maybe Paterno can scoop up one of Parkland's offensive lineman as well - no one gains that kind of yardage without a great offensive line.>>
