Hutchison Whampoa Ltd (13.HK) is expected to announce its 3G pricing strategy for the UK this week ahead of the services' expected launch early next year, the South China Morning Post reported, citing Carphone Warehouse Group Plc investor relations director Peregrine Riviere. Carphone Warehouse announced Friday it has signed a commercial contract with Hutchison 3G to become an official distributor of Hutchison 3G's third generation mobile devices and services, which will soon be available across all of its 470 UK stores. Riviere said Hutchison would rely on independent retail mobile dealers for major distribution. "As far as we understand, they don't have any plans for a major roll-out at their own stores but for a handful of flagship stores which will be very important for promoting their 3G brand and introducing their service when it is ready," he said. "Hopefully, the service will be launched in the next three months," he said. Earlier this year, Hutchison unit AS Watson & Co Ltd acquired Kruidvat Holding BV and Kruidvat Superdrug BV, owner of the Superdrug pharmacy chain in the UK, which it will also use to distribute its 3G products. Hutchison Whampoa holds a 65 pct stake in Hutchison 3G, while the other major shareholders are NTT DoCoMo, with a 20 pct interest, and KPN Mobile with 15 pct.
