I don't know whether Lott is unfit to lead Republicans because Republicans have the right to choose leadership that's to their own liking. But Lott is certainly unfit to receive my support, and so is any party that could stomach his leadership. He has done this sort of thing before and I gave him the benefit of the doubt. No more. America is in the process of a long, terribly painful and arduous transition wherein large numbers of blacks (perhaps we will later find it is the largest number ever) are beginning to consider it possible that this nation could truly accept them as citizens. It may come as a surprise to us, but for many blacks this is a question that has not really been answered. It hasn't been answered because up to now, blacks have either been despised or just handed stuff as if they couldn't get it themselves. Many blacks want to fight and struggle to win just like the rest of us. It is no coincidence that the leading people against Affirmative Action in America are black people - and these black leaders are catching pure hell from the majority of blacks - yet they just keep tugging onward, pulling the entire mass of American blacks with them. Regardless of his political motives, Bush is in part responsible for answering the question of black citizenship. He is responsible for helping blacks transition from the liberal plantation. But today many blacks exist in sort of uneasy limbo. They sense the past has been a waste, but they are too wary of conservatives to take the plunge with us. I am not a Powell fan where politics is concerned, but the guy represents some serious history in America. Seeing Powell duking it out with Rumsfeld, sometimes losing and sometimes winning, and on his own merit, just as if blacks have always had their hands on the reigns of power, has GOT to have had an effect on huge numbers of blacks - especially black youth. I suspect that is why poll after poll shows younger blacks identifying less with Democrats. That is why, despite the garbage and insults of Powell from streetwalking overcomers like Julian Bond and Harry Belafonte (what has this guy done any dang way?), polls yet show that Colin Powell has a very high rating amongst young blacks. With black folk quietly coming into the mainstream, leading such companies as Symantec, Time/Warner, American Express and several others, the younger folk are definitely gaining hope for their own dang possibilities. Republicans should be out there taking the dang credit for it! After all, they've helped do much more of the hard work here than the dang Democrats. But what in the hell do they do? They let a damned nazi pull some crap like this, even as an election was taking place in Louisiana, and they let him stay where he is in comfort? Forgit dat mess.
