It's been going on for centuries because it is part of our wiring. Duh. For someone so smart, she had kind of a blind spot. There is advantage in being part of a collective. To overlook that, is to overlook the whole game. You must understand the appeal of collectivism. For many people (and at least half of any population are below "average") there is comfort in submersion in a group. How do you give those mediocre and below average people any hope, when you try to push them into a world where everything rests on their inadequate shoulders? They know there is safety in numbers, because they know they aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer. What has Ayn to offer those poor souls? Her appeal is to the intellectual, or the striver, who knows his or her worth, who knows that survival and even success is possible in almost any situation. But for at least half the population that notion rings hollow. Because Ayn's philosophy does not have a very popular appeal, it is probably doomed.

What has Ayn to say to any real "average" Joe? Not much.
