That is strange. No, "coming close to Muslim holy sites" has little-to-nothing to do with why there is currently a backlash from the Muslim street.

My understanding of the resentment from Arabs in particular is that they are pissed off by what they see as constant harassment of Muslims around the world by the US. (Their idea, not mine. Don't shoot the messenger.) The most important of all is that US unconditionally supports Israel against Palestinians. Of lesser importance: US supports Russia against Chechens. US invades Afghanistan and throws away the laws of Sharia. US cooks up reasons to invade Iraq for its oil fields. That is how they see it. Their understanding of world matters is shaped to a great extent by their limited media and state propaganda Bush supporting Israel or talking in strange metaphors like "axis of evil" adds to this rage.
