I worked in the "data processing" department at Southern Pacific for a few years on the 1960's.

SP was more advanced than the banks (I worked Bank of America on the swing shift). Even in those early days they had real time tracking of all their cars (bar code readers installed next to track reporting live from all over the country), over a private microwave data network (that ultimately became US Sprint.)
