Our interests are always american interests as i see them. Nothing to do with israel. I have not been uncritical of american policy toward the region and I have been critical of Israeli policy too since the 1967 war. Infitada 2 and 9/11 have changed everything for both nations and now both are engaged in an epoch battle against primitivism unrestrained violence against civilians. Palestinian claim is that occupation is the cause. It doesnt matter anymore. Same for israelis who claim palestinaian failure to accept UN mandated partition and so on. What counts is where we go from here. Is there one Pal who can look beyond this mess and articlate policy of accomodation and peace. So far no. mike

>>Most of the financing of the IRA came from the US. Would that be grounds for the British to invade the US?<<

Good (and embarrassing) point. In addition to your point, there were enormous political consequences to any American who criticized the IRA. When I discussed the IRA in the Republic of Ireland, I was amazed at the hostility towards them that was expressed by the Irish. They were confounded by American support for "the crazies" (their term). The Sinn Fein had 2% of the vote. Mayor Koch correctly stated that the IRA had precious little support in R of I, and he lost tremendous political capital in NY.
