Terry >I understand that we need to be strong in order to defend ourselves,

If I may ask, against what? There is no nation on earth that can match the firepower of the US. As far as the terrorists are concerned, that's like defending oneself against bacteria --- is it, in fact, possible? And, maybe there's also a lesson to be learned from the bacteria. Perhaps the best way to defend against them is not drugs but to build up one's immune system --- to eat well and lead a healthy life.

>but we also have to be wise about it.

The problem is that the world sees what you are calling defence as aggression --- as expansion of the American Empire. In fact, as bullying.

> I would love to live in a world with no nuclear arms

So many countries have nuclear facilities these days that it may not be feasible to control nuclear weapons, even if they try to. Anyway, we both lived through the the "cold war" with the USSR where thousands of nuclear-tipped missiles were poised ready all over the place. In fact, today, I am sure the threats are much less.

>maybe not even any oil!

Perhaps the problem is the price rather than its availability.

>do you find this article offensive?"{Not at all

I'm glad. Charley Reese is one of my favorite commentators and, as you can read, he is very cross with the Bush administration. Furthermore, he is not talking conspiracy stuff.
