I think the fundamental problem is that the existence of civilizations or nations is not a straight line going off into the Heavens but a circle or cycle which starts near the bottom, rises to a zenith and then descends again. No nation or civilization, since the beginning of time, has been able maintain its ascendancy for more than a century, or a few centuries, at most. I'm not suggesting that the US is on the descent but there's no doubt, as Lenin said, every civilization contains the "seeds of its own destruction". It's also apparent, when we look at the US, that we can see those "seeds" quite clearly, not least in its own self-consciousness that its power is waining. >There was a time that this nation was revered by all other nations. Yes, so was Babylon (Iraq), Persia, Egypt, Greece, Rome, Mongolia at the time of Genghis Khan, Islam at the time of Mohammed, Spain, Holland, Italy (Venice) and Britain. Even Germany was held in esteem before WW2. In fact, it seems very many nations have had a turn at being at the top of the "Top 20". Somehow Japan didn't make it but I do think China looks promising, possibly for a second time. Anyway, I don't think there's any chance that any nation in Africa will appear on the list again!
