Inhale Therapeutic Systems 10 %

SAN CARLOS, Calif. (Dow Jones)--Inhale Therapeutic Systems Inc. will cut 75 jobs, or 10% of its work force, as part of a realignment plan to focus on its core businesses.

In a press release Wednesday, the maker of drug delivery technologies said it will record a fourth-quarter charge of $3 million from the job cuts, most of which are at the company's San Carlos, Calif., headquarters.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call expect Inhale to report a loss of 53 cents a share for the fourth quarter.

In the year-ago quarter, Inhale posted an operating loss of 37 cents a share.

Inhale said the staff reduction will reduce 2003 expenses by about $8 million. The company plans to use a portion of the savings in areas targeted for increased investment in 2003.

Further guidance on 2003 spending will be provided during Inhale's fourth quarter conference call in late January.

Shares of Inhale closed Wednesday at $8.52, down 32 cents, or 3.6%, on Nasdaq volume of 329,204 shares. Average daily volume is 309,176 shares.
