I will, and he intended it as a racists remark, or he wouldn't have used it......period!

I don't know why you are trying to rationalize Byrd's use of the N-word. Whether the topic has been race relations or pork, Byrd has never been as a master of the subtle point. I was watching Russert interview Byrd when he made the comment. If I recall correctly, Bryd was making the point that at in his earlier years there were whites that were so disadvantaged that they were considered to be "white niggers." He was trying to make an historical point. It was a slip of the tongue; Bryd was simply using a word that he was comfortable using when he was younger. I doubt whether he used it intentionally, not that he wasn't a racist at one point in his life. Bear in mind that he is obviously a bit senile now.

Read David McCullough's biography of Truman. Truman used the word all of the time. Read Caro's biographies of Johnson. He made artful use of the word. These guys (and Byrd) were all from the same (now broken) mold.

It is a deplorable word and any politician using it in the U.S. should probably be vaporized.
