The tendency to characterize in dehumanizing terms those we disagree with or perceive as potentially dangerous is well-nigh universal. I'm no special fan of Strom Thurmond, but I found this remark no less offensive and uncalled for than referring to Arabs as animals.

Again, I did not mean all Arabs. Not even remotely.

But when I see people gleefully celebrating the deaths of thousands of innocent people (and I'm sure you recall that it was not just the Palestinians), then I am apt to label based on their actions.

"Animals" was chosen because this behavior would indicate a total lack of compassion for the innocent people that died. Its an issue of their humanity, or lack of, and it was defined by their actions.

If only the Pentagon had been attacked, or a regional military installation, then my view of this would be quite different.

So, I did not mean to offend, but if acts like I duck I will label it as such.
