But one thing we can know is that counting on Saddam to be deterrable is taking a VERY big risk.

And so is initiating a civilizational war in the Mideast. There is this erroneous perception that a drive for modernity will necessarily equate to the embracing of democracy in the Mideast. This has been the rhetorical stance taken by this administration--a rather arrogant, naive, and unrealistic proposition, at best. Permanent change always start from within society (witness the evolving revolution in Iran) and cannot be imposed by the will of an external force. The illusion and trap is to believe otherwise.

Who is the common man most devoted to? Self, family, tribe, country or religion? This is a complicated issue with no easy answers.
