That picture was taken near downtown at sea level. It looks east toward the front range of the Chugach mountains, which tops out at 4-5,000 feet. You can hike up many of those peaks without technical aids in the summer. (Further east there are some 10-13,000 footers poking up out of the glaciers.)

The beetle-kill photo was taken from a valley in those mountains right above Anchorage. On a clear day you can see Denali from that vantage point.
