Without international respect, our power is a detriment, serving only as a rallying cry for warlords recruiting suicide militia for their own political gain. The contradictions, regardless how smugly put, are obvious. Rumsfeld on the one hand declares the worldwide campaign of extreme automated violence to "eradicate terrorism" (this week redeclaring the policy of the US using WMDs). While on the other hand states clearly the Islamist suiciders are "undeterrable". Taking both positions is the surest way to unending worldwide conflict, as well as maximum damage in the US, martial law and political crystalization. No non-lethal position is attempted or even acknowledged, or even allowed to surface by critics, such as removing hundreds of billions in US flow of funds to blood feuds overseas, and see how they can continue their battles among themselves, without the US as a scapegoat. Instead, we hear the same corrupted, bribed argument, "The US hasn't done enough!". We've done entirely too much in the past 50 years, and the past 200 military campaigns, unilaterally by the Executive, or whistled through Congress, but mostly unauthorized by the American people. Both arrogance and corruption will lead to Armaggedon, if Bill Joy's fears come to pass ("The Future Doesn't Need Us"). Either corrupt secret agencies in the US will foment massive attacks on the American people through Islamists, like an expansion of the Anthrax attacks to more pernicious bioterrorism bugs, or the Islamists will find it all by themselves. Either way, Big Government wins, and the insiders who conceal their actions from the American people under the Royal cloak of "national security". Elections will be ceremonial. Terrorism in our neighborhoods will be routine. In short, the US will be like Israel, except orders of magnitude worse if a new plague emerges or tit-for-tat WMDs are loosed by the Unaccountables in Washington. Fulbright's comments should be read more widely and carefully. What does Rumsfeld and the administration have to say about that state of affairs? "I can live with that" -- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense, Bush II Administration, predicting the destruction of the American way of life.
