LSBC Expecting some response tomorrow to today's news about a LSBC Scientist demonstrating that bone marrow stem cells can be expanded quantitatively in vitro:

VACAVILLE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 15, 2002--For the first time, scientists have shown that bone marrow stem cells can be expanded quantitatively in a laboratory.

John P. Chute, MD of Large Scale Biology Corporation is corresponding author of a peer-reviewed article entitled "Ex vivo culture with human brain endothelial cells increases the SCID-repopulating capacity of adult human bone marrow," published today in Blood, the journal of the American Society of Hematology.

The article reports a novel culture method utilizing human brain endothelial cells for which data in mice studies demonstrate a unique hematopoietic activity that increases the repopulating capacity of adult human bone marrow.

It is expected that development of such in vitro culture methods to promote expansion of adult human bone marrow will have direct applications in clinical gene therapy and stem cell transplantation.
