The problem is the republicans seem to have a homogeneous group of southern males all of which are middle age to older in the ranks and whenever Bush has a chance to appoint someone different from that basic makeup he fails to do so, then you add the republican leadership in the congress Lott, delay etc and it really looks like an "old southern boys club". I am in favor of many bush policies (not all) but I don't like many of the leaders of the republican party

Even if it was just a boneheaded comment out of affection for Strom, he's given the Dems something to whine about. If nothing else, boneheadedness should disqualify him from the post.

I agree, but to be sure, this is the second time he's said the same thing. That and some other things he's done over the last 20 years suggest that he has not yet come to terms with how anti-american were the segregationist policies of the South. So I don't think it was just a boneheaded comment.

But even if it was, in the big leagues there are certain mistakes you are just not allowed to make, not even once (see Scott Norwood for an example from the world of sports).

Lott made one of those. He should resign.

so what? the dems always have something to whine about. who can blame them? the cowardly republicans always cave in and pander. of course, informed individuals realize that a bunch of jews orchestrated this backlash.

trent lott should step down because he is a pathetic coward, not because of anything he said. president bush is a total coward too. so sorry W, cowards don't get my vote.
