Peter, beta seems to me a shotgun marriage between two factors that don't have much to do with each other - the stock's volatility, and it's tendency to track the market. People who haven't looked up the definition, tend, like Sam, to assume that beta is simply the volatility expressed as a comparison to the market volatility, which seems more logical and useful. But perhaps beta has it's uses?
