Argentina defaults on World Bank debt (again)

14 December, 2002 09:23 GMT+08:00

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (Reuters) - Argentina's government said on Friday it had defaulted on more than $700 million due to the World Bank, a second missed payment that cuts the bankrupt country off from any aid from the bank.

Argentina had already let pass a first deadline a month ago, technically defaulting and ending any hope for new loans. But Friday's missed payment cuts off access to roughly $2 billion in existing financing that had been earmarked for AIDS programs, high schools and farm aid.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. consumer optimism brightened in December, brushing back concerns about possible war with Iraq and rising jobless rates, and boosting hopes for a joyous holiday shopping season.

A series of private and government reports on Friday offered hints of better economic prospects ahead as wholesale prices remained well in check in November, and a closely watched gauge of consumer confidence moved higher this month.
