" there was George Wallace, Lester Maddox, and probably countless others of their ilk, they were all democrats, even Thurmond was a democrat in 1948 "

You nitwit.....most all democrats in the south were segregationist prior to 1964....hence the term the "Solid South". The south became democratic because Lincoln was a Republican and they wouldn't support him or his party. When the Civil Rights Act of 64 was enacted the southern segregationists got pissed and began a mass migration to the republican party which is more sympathetic to their cause and it continues to the this day. All of those southern dem politicians switching to the repubs is for no other reason but to gain votes from conservative southerners still resisting integration. It is now a solid Republican south for one reason.....race!!!!
