Lott will leave the Senate leadership, not because, as you say (It's not what he said, or what he believes, it's whether he's a liability) it's because what he said was incredibly stupid and no amount of apologizing can erase it. It destroyed his moral authority to lead, and he has to suffer the consequences. He can still be the Senator from Mississippi, since Mississippians are the only ones who have anything to say about that.
